Get ready for this fourth rendition (in three years) of the popular Teen Health Camp for all Big Island students (public, chartered, private, home-school) in grades 8-12.
Date & Time: November 9, 2013, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Venue: Kealakehe High School
The camp introduces student participants to mentors and partners across all levels of education and areas of expertise including healthcare professionals, healthcare students, pre-healthcare college students. Workshops are set-up to give participants the ability to interact with individuals at each level on the path to professionalism.
The one-day Camp consists of five workshops and various activities designed to whet the students’ appetites, pique their interest and curiosity, and hopefully leave them asking for more:
- Two workshops (suturing and casting) that allow participants to simulate a day in the clinic, practicing simple suture techniques on synthetic suture arms and putting real casts on their fellow campers.
- Two workshops (nutrition and public health) for participants to learn about local healthcare issues, explore a simulated food court where they learn the nutritional value of a typical local lunch, and they discuss difficult issues such as STDs and risky, personal behaviors.
- The fifth workshop focuses on career opportunities and options in which students learn about exciting opportunities exist in healthcare careers.
- The “Speed Dating” activity enables students to meet healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, dentists, nurses, therapists, lab technicians, administrators), and ask questions about their pathways, journeys and adventures in the health field. Students will find that the possibilities are endless and all within reach!
Online registration opens on October 1, and closes on October 31.
